However, if you want a website, you need to create it using web development software. The days of having to know HTML code for the design are (thankfully!) gone. There are dozens of editor programs out there for Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating software. Called WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), these programs, they range form high end programs, such Dreamweaver or Microsoft products to low cost or free editors like Hot Dog Pro or Namo Web Editor. About.com has more examples: http://webdesign.about.com/od/htmleditors/tp/aatpwyswindows.html For Macs, there are also several high end to low-end editors. Adobe Dreamweaver is a great high end program while iWeb comes already installed in your new Mac computer. Again, About.com has a list: http://webdesign.about.com/od/htmleditors/tp/aatpwysedmac.html In designing your website, remember that the “cleaner” the better. A website that is crowded and hard to navigate (moving from one area to another) will not get much traffic and be hard to decipher. And always on your different pages, make it easy to get back home. Again, About.com has a good basic layout tutorial at: http://webdesign.about.com/od/webdesignbasics/u/webdesignbasics.html Here’s information on how photographer and SWL Kent Sievers set up his website: The Name Your site will need a domain name. In my case, I wanted www.kentsievers.com I went to a domain seller like www.whois.com to see if it was available. Luckily, that is not too common a name and I was able to buy it for around ten bucks a year. Common names like hamshack.com, or cq.com etc. will likely be taken, but search for your ideal site name anyway, sometimes you get lucky and no one else will have thought of it or may have let the ownership lapse. Web hosting services are everywhere. Many will sell you the domain name and offer hosting as a package deal. Usually you get what you pay for. Huge hosting services like GoDaddy are great but if you’re new to this and may have issues getting your brain around simple stuff like using ftp (file transfer protocol) to upload or update your finished site to your host’s servers, you might look at a smaller company that won’t lose you in the shuffle of millions of customers. In my case I went with a small company in Denver called Itsamac. They’ve since changed their name to MacHighway, but even to this day, if I have a question, I can whip off an email to tech support and someone is there to hold my hand and answer even the most basic questions. |
