In a era when many newspapers are closing, getting a reporter to actually come to cover a story can be hard enough. The expectation of getting a news photographer to come with them is simply unrealistic. Plan on taking your own pictures – but good pictures. So, if a good picture tells a story, what is a bad picture? Unfortunately, hams take really bad pictures all too often. It has nothing to do with focus and F-stops (those are automatic these days). But the posture, subject and framing of many pictures sent in to ARRL and to news outlets kills any chance of their being used. Take a good look at what you are going to capture. Is that really what you want to show as Amateur Radio? Here are some examples you’ve probably seen: The logo shirt. Some of them are much worse! The “Firing Squad” picture. No story here! Good pictures will “sell” the story for you! Not only in newspapers, but also on the Web and a host of networking options. |
