Wednesday, June 17 -

you’re now 10 days out and Wednesday is the day that many weeklies and the community inserts for daily newspapers begin to assemble stories for next Wednesday’s edition on June 24.

 

Wednesday, June 24 -

Fax and email releases to TV news departments early in the morning.  Many TV stations will hold their weekend assignment meetings late Wednesday or early Thursday morning.

 

Friday, June 26 -

Send out a reminder release to all media outlets

 

Saturday, June 27 -

one last reminder release in the morning

 

Sunday, June 28 -

you can send a release in the morning to the assignment editors of daily newspapers and TV news depts. for one last ditch coverage effort.

 

 

 

See?  Yes, it took a lot of time to lay out the dates and methods for alerting the media, but once the calendar is laid out, then executing the effort is easy because you know what your objectives are.  There’s no reason a PIO can’t design a calendar like this for three or more major events in your area.

 

 

 

 

NOTE: If amateur radio is part of a larger event, such as a county emergency drill or communications for a charity walk or run, find out who is the PIO for the lead organization.  Spend some time six to eight weeks in advance of the event to see if the organization will agree to highlight the work being done by amateur radio.  In cases like this, amateur radio is NOT the main event, and it would be wrong for an amateur radio PIO to promote amateur radio in addition to the primary event.  The advantage of situations like these is that chances are greater that media will cover a large community event, and even a short mention of amateur radio will be well perceived by the community.
