It really doesn’t matter what is on that paper.  The viewer sees the next part of the story, handing it off to someone who acts upon it.  They create the “story line” in their own head.  You have changed a boring picture into an action picture.

Technical Details

With the passing of the newsroom and specialized news photographers, film cameras are pretty much a thing of the past.  You will need to use a digital camera and shoot at the highest resolution possible.  Three MB or more size pictures are a good place to start.  .JPG type files are the best as they are universally editable.

Remember you can always go down in resolution, but never back up.  We also want to make it as easy as possible for the media to have and use the resultant photos.

You can use simple programs like Microsoft Office Picture Manager (that comes with Windows) or other programs to crop and change color shades – but NEVER add or delete parts in the resultant picture itself.  “Doctoring” photos is a major offense in news uses and will get you “invited OUT” of any future PR work quickly.

Got pictures - Now what do I do?

You have some really good pictures that tell a story.  They make us look good.  There’s action and interest in them.  You want to put them together with your press release and get it out to the media, websites, newsletters, etc.

For the news media if you don’t know them

In general, do not simply put them as an attachment to an email and fire it off.  It will probably be stopped by a spam filter.  Send the release and put very clearly at the bottom of the release notice that you have pictures available and contact info on how to get them.  Hopefully they will bite and ask you for the pictures.

For news media if you DO know them

This is where relationships developed ahead of the event are important.  You can call the reporter or email them and say that you have a release and pictures.  Ask how to get them to the reporter.  Most of the time they will give you a special email address.
