PIO email reflector Two ways to get the latest information are on the main ARRL web news page and on the PIO email reflector. The reflector has over 450 PIOs, media people, reporters and leaders as members. Postings to the reflector are NOT screened - which allows for fast distribution, but also carries with it the responsibility that members will police it themselves (much like Amateur Radio use). To join the reflector, you need to write to apitts@arrl.org and ask to be added. Be sure to give the email address you want to use for the postings.
“Just fill in the blanks” Press Releases In major activities, ARRL HQ often publishes “fill in the blank” type press releases for your use. These are pre-written for you and all you have to do is put in your own contact information, a name or two and they are ready to be sent on to your local media contacts. It doesn’t get any easier than that!
The ARRL main news page The main news page is also a source of information for your use. Sections from stories there are often copied and pasted into PIO releases and information sheets. This is perfectly OK as long as you put in a line giving credits to the ARRL for the material you use. http://www.arrl.org
The Swiss Army Knife for PIOs Every year or so we write a new edition of the “Swiss Army Knife for PIOs.” This is a computer CD with almost all of the files, forms and information we anticipate a PIO may need, all put into one place. It has been a major aid to PIOs and other ARRL leaders. You can see and download a copy at: www.arrl.org/swiss-army-knife
The ARRL Public Relations Committee (PRC) The President of the ARRL appoints approximately 12 people each year to serve on a national committee which oversees and supports the PR activities of the ARRL staff and membership. The members of the committee have extensive experience in PR, media, audio and video work, writing and other skills needed in modern Public Relations. If you have an unusual situation, a thorny problem, or if you have something really exciting and positive coming up, the PRC’s experience and advice can be a major help to you.
