Goals of this section: Identify key liability issues a PIO might face Understand basic copyright and fair use issues Become aware of FCC rules and newsgathering issues It’s the Law! The Bill of Rights is the first 10 Amendments to the US Constitution. I hope you are aware not only that they exist, but also what they actually say. They are ALL important, but the first one is critical to you as a PIO. “Congress shall make no law abridging freedom of speech or of the press.” That simple statement is the basis of American news services. It seems simple, but…. It’s NOT all that simple when acted out in the real world. Here are a few examples that “gum up the works.” Press shield laws Who or what is a “reporter” anymore?
